Day 1 Before the walk: Kayakoy to Olu Deniz

Our base for the next two nights is kayakoy ~ ghost town. The town was originally inhabited 500 years BC and fell into ruin after the forced removal of the Greek population in 1923 following Turkish independence. There is a melancholy feel in the village, the stone ruined houses mostly dating from the 18th century far out numbered by the intact houses and there are very few tourists. We think that all the hordes that arrived at Dalaman airport are at bigger resorts.

A view of the ghost town built into the hillside.

We slept very well after our first glass of raki after dinner last night and were up before anything was open for breakfast. So we wondered through the village identifying fruit and nut trees. There are figs, pomegranates, peaches, walnuts and olives all around.
Finally we found a place for coffee under a fig tree. After a yummy breakfast we are off for the walk, 8:30 am local time.
